Book Review: A Broad Review of Andrew Murray's Humility

Andrew Murray was  a prolific preacher and writer in the 19th century.  He wrote many books, but his work on prayer change the way I viewed the topic.  His work Humility:  The Beauty of Holiness is no different.  In her book A Broad Review of Andrew Murray’s Humility, Fran Rodgers summarizes this pivotal work.

Humility is defined as “freedom from pride or arrogance :  the quality or state of being humble (Merriam-Webster).”  The way that Andrew Murray describes humility is something we all should strive for, and the way that Fran Rodgers summarizes his work is masterful.  Normally in book summaries there is much left out, but Fran summarized, condensed, and was still able to maintain the original message that Murray was wanting to convey.  In addition, Fran provided commentary with real world experiences to add to the importance of this cardinal virtue.

The book is divided into twelve chapters, and each summarizes once chapter of Murray’s work.  On page twelve Fran writes, “Humility is accepting all things as they come; believing in His sovereignty and plans for us, praising Him in all things as we seek His kingdom and righteousness, anticipating that He will lead us to know Him and what He desires for us.”  This book has been extremely beneficial to the way that I see humility.  Fran is a talented writer, a great teacher, and one will greatly benefit spiritually from her work.  I highly recommend that you check this book out.

  1. William, I am humbled to read your review. Thank you for reading. I hope that others will read and benefit from the truths about which Murray wrote, the humility that our Lord works in our lives. When we see the need for this long misplaced virtue, desire it, pray for it, and wait in anticipation, He will express this by HIs own Spirit in us. There is no true work of redemption and a Christian walk without it. Blessings for your ministry. Fran
