“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin.”- Hebrews 4:15
We all need someone who we can confide in. Have you ever told someone your deepest darkest fears and secrets, and it was turned around to be about them? I am as guilty as the next person in doing this. This is often because they do not understand what exactly it we are going through.
We often hear that same thing about Christ. Many people say there “there is no way I can go to him. He has no idea what I am going through.” Today’s verse says he was tempted in every way but did not sin. He was even tempted by Satan himself. As far as human experiences go he was homeless (Luke 9:58), abandoned by loves ones (Mark 14:43-52), betrayed (Matthew 27:3), experienced death of loved ones (John 11:1-44), and was tortured and executed (Luke 23:26-43). There are many other situations and verses that can be cited, but one thing is constant. Jesus Christ, though fully divine, experienced humanity in a very personal way. He does understand what we go through. That is why we approach the throne of grace with confidence to ask him for help in what we are going through (Hebrews 4:16). He empathizes.
