No more vanity

“Vanities of vanities, says the Preacher, vanities of vanities!  All is vanity.”-Ecclesiastes 1:2

According to many scholars, Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon after he repented of his idolatry and came back to God.  The word “vanity” is used some 35 times in the book.  It is difficult to understand at times, but I has an everyday application to us today.

What are we pursuing?  Whether it be riches, a spouse, or a promotion today’s verse says it is all vanity.  The word is used in a way that describes something as “transient or worthless.”  The point that the author is trying to make is that if “all is vanity” it should drive people to take refuge in God, whose work endures forever.

If we are doing something for the wrong reasons then it will ultimately be rendered as vanity.  Resolve today to ask God what you are to do.  Put his motives first, your relationship with him first, and your life will not be in vain.  Resolve today to allow God to work through you and be an instrument that he uses to bring others to the kingdom.
